Do… Love… Walk…

He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?  Micah 6:8 (NKJV)

——————————————————————————

I first fell in love with this verse many years ago (I’m old) when I heard it in a song by the Maranatha! Singers.  That song made it very easy for me to memorize one of the most significant verses in the whole Bible concerning the will of God for us occupants of Planet Earth.  Very concisely, God has given us a simple formula to live a successful life and to help order a perfect society:

  • Do justice;
  • Love mercy;
  • Walk side-by-side with our unbelievably great Creator.

They are not presented in a prioritized order (Do this, and then do that, and if you have time, do the other…).  Not one of them  is dispensable.  In fact, I believe they are interdependent.  Micah 6:8 is the perfect companion to the words of Jesus in Mark 12:30-31 (NLT), quoted from Deuteronomy 6:5 & Leviticus 9:18: “‘And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’No other commandment is greater than these.'”

Where Jesus begins with our responsibility to our Creator (Love the Lord), Micah begins with our responsibility to our fellow man (do justly, love mercy). Jesus then introduces our responsibility toward our fellow man, while Micah culminates his beautiful statement with an intimate invitation to be God’s traveling companion. Throughout scripture we are are met with the simplicity of relationship: vertically connected with God the Father and horizontally connected with our brothers and sisters created in the same image.

In this first series of posts, I want to look at each of these three principles and examine how their fusion into each of our lives would impact our world.  At minimum, I believe you will see an increase of peace in your own life as you begin to live in the rhythm of God.

Coming frighteningly soon: “Do Justice…”
