A story that needs to be written…

Verneda and I moved back to San Antonio seven years ago, returning to the home of our youth.  The past seven years have taught us some of the greatest lessons of our lives.  Most of those lessons have been enjoyable.  Some have not been so; but the times of adversity have brought maturity and self-understanding to a degree that a life of constant ease could never have. In this season I have buried my hero – my father, Bobbie Fike – who taught me the value of sacrificial service.  I have seen my firstborn son wed a wonderful woman, poised to make their marks on the world.  Our younger son has persevered under heavy burdens and is nearing the top of his hill, a true champion.

After our recent time of refreshing (and thank you for your wonderful comments on our pictures!), my wife and I returned with the resolve to make the next several years the strongest season of our life.  In the past few years we had each placed our hands on our respective plows and labored long hours in our individual professional fields.  We grew tired of the separateness of our livelihoods and longed for a path we could walk down hand in hand.

After much prayer, we have made the difficult decision that the time has come for me to leave my position as associate pastor at BRCC and to pursue opportunities where God can more completely use our gifts and passions together.  We have a story to write and we cannot put it off any longer.  This is not a goodbye to anyone; we want you to enjoy our journey as well.  Please continue to commune with us on facebook (well, at least me; Verneda rarely goes on it!), and follow my continuing blog here at  There are exciting times ahead for all of us!

Your presence will be missed more than you know. As long as my family has been attending BRCC, your face was always a familiar one. My prayer for you is that God leads you to a path of peace, joy and fullfillment. Thank you for your service and dedication all these years. You made a difference in people’s lives in ways you may never know. I am excited to see how you will spend the next season of your ilfe and how God’s plan will be presented. Remember what Craig Groschel said at GLS…”If you ain’t dead…you ain’t done!”

    George & Verneda,
Congratulations on your decision! It was great seeing you last December in good ol’ Chi-Town! I look forward to watching (reading) your blog. Maybe you will be able to make more trips to Chi-Town.

Wow. I did not see that coming. Your whacky jokes and your special gifts of compassion and your insight will be missed as leader of the Prayer Team. I pray that you and Verneda will receive all the blessings you so richly deserve. May God bless you in all that you do. Thank You so much for your time and service all these yrs.

    Pastor George and Vermeda,
I feel happy for both of you, yet feel some sadness too that you no longer will be with us @ BRCC. Pastor George, thank you for everything that you have done for us, it ‘s greatly appreciated. Thank you for officiating our 25th Wedding vow Renewal. That meant a lot for me and my family. I lift you both to the Lord Almighty. May he bless your plans as you continue to serve him.I’m sure of that coz’ that’s what his word says” The steps of the righteous are ordered by the Lord”. ‘And to everything, there is a time and a season an a purpose under the heaven”. The Lord is with you! God Bless!
