On the 1st day of Christmas… Great I AM become Son of Man

santa georgeThere is a part of me – one that goes deep within, I dare say to my marrow – that wants badly to believe Christmas is a winter-time story. That it’s not really Christmas unless the tip of my nose is cold as an ice cube; that snow will fall gently just to bring the manger scene into its greatest clarity by its simple backdrop of white. So for me, the following video is completely accurate in capturing the feel of the season…

On this, the first of my 12 posts leading up to Christmas, I want to give you my “partridge” – the 1st of 12 songs I have written and put together in a collection. This one is a Christmas song that was inspired by that great Christmas favorite “Silent Night.” As I dwell on the beauty of the Incarnation I can’t help but look past the cradle to the cross that lay ahead for the child born to die for all.

You know, there’s a charming “rural legend” that says Joseph Mohr and Frans Gruber hastily composed “Silent Night” largely due to mechanical failure. The story goes that mice ate through the bellows that powered the church’s pipe organ, so they had to quickly come up with a song that could be played with a guitar, the only instrument available to them that Christmas Eve. I love that story! But just as there was no snow on the hills when the angels serenaded the shepherds, the story has little historical weight. But one aspect of the story I love very much: apparently Frans LOVED the guitar and WANTED to use it. And what could have been more appropriate? Just as the King of Kings came to a simple man and woman in a simple little town, as the song says a “lowly birth,” there is a profound beauty to the simplicity of the words, the melody, and MY favorite instrument.

I hoped to capture the wonder of this beauty in my song “Son of Man.” Beyond the simple birth of the “Great I AM become Son of Man,” he is the baby born to die that I might live. I pray you enjoy it.

Silent is the night
Holy is the night
All is calm and bright
Angels fill the sky – what a sight!
Shepherds, leave your fold
Wise men, bring your gold
Angels, leave your skies
Come and praise your King humbly disguised

Alleluia! Sing hosanna!
Peace on earth, good will to all men!

How we’re filled with awe
Baby in the straw
Glory to the Lamb
Great I AM become Son of Man

Silent is the night
Holy is the night
All is calm and bright
Tears fill our eyes, now given sight
Clearly now we see
You can set us free
Baby grown to man
Wore our crown of thorns
Our nails in Your hands

Alleluia! Sing hosanna!
Peace on earth, good will to all men!

See Him in the straw
The One to die for all
Glory to the Lamb
Great I AM become Son of Man

How we’re filled with awe
Baby in the straw
Glory to the Lamb
Great I AM become Son of Man

If you can’t wait till Christmas for all of my 12 gifts, you can listen to all of them at this link. See you tomorrow!
