On the 4th day of Christmas… The Disciple’s Prayer

20121216-170801.jpg As we’re on the 4th day of Christmas I figured I’d pause a second and give a little background on the carol. First off, the 12 days actually start on Christmas Day and lead up to January 6th, Orthodox Christmas or Epiphany – the traditional day the wise Men were thought to have visited the Holy family. When the song was conceived in the Middle Ages, it is believed that it was used to reinforce the teaching of the gospel message. The gifts of each day were representative of important people, objects, or doctrines of the faith, as follows:

12 drummers drumming – the 12 statements in the Apostles’ Creed

11 pipers piping – the 11 faithful apostles (sorry, Judas. You’re fired!)

10 lords a-leaping – the 10 commandments

9 ladies dancing – the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23)

8 maids a-milking – the Beatitudes (blessed are’s in Matthew 5)

7 swans a-swimming – the motivational spiritual gifts from the Father (Romans 8)

6 geese a-laying – the six epochs of creation (Genesis 1)

5 golden rings – the Pentateuch (the 1st 5 Books of Moses in the Bible)

4 calling birds – the 4 gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John)

3 French hens – the gifts of the wisemen (gold, frankincense, and myrrh) or the 3 gifts of God (faith, hope, and love – 1 Corinthians 13)

2 turtle doves – the offering of Mary and Joseph after Jesus’ birth or the two covenants (the Old and New Testaments)

A partridge in a pear tree – the greatest gift of all, Jesus the Messiah

20121216-171138.jpg So here we are on the 4th day, so my offering today is a song from the gospels, Jesus’ teaching on how to pray. It’s usually referred to as the Lord’s Prayer, but many prefer ‘the Disciple’s Prayer’ which is the title I have used for my song. This simple little prayer recorded in Matthew 6:9-13 establishes a meditation to lead us out of self-centeredness into the heavenly perspective of God, Who amazingly delights to be our Father; from this heightened viewpoint we launch ourselves with a laser focus to effect change in the world, bringing forgiveness to people around us and the fight to God’s enemy, the unseen power behind the evil of our world. We rest in confidence that God will give the best to those who leave the choices up to Him.

As always, you can find all 12 songs HERE.
